Drones give D&B brand a lift over catwalk at Milan fashion show

Catwalk models could face new competition in the form of fashion presenters that are slimmer, lighter and can float on air.

Drones were used at a fashion show here to carry the handbags of Italian luxury brand Dolce & Gabbana on Feb. 25.

Rhizomatiks Co., a Japanese team of engineers, and the fashion house joined forces to fuse technology and fashion in showing the brand’s autumn/winter women’s collection during Milan Fashion Week.

With music in the background, eight drones glided up and down the catwalk and eventually lined up behind each other.

catwalk /kǽtwɑ̀lk/ を取り上げます。catwalkの次に modelsと続くことから、ファッションショーのことをさしているのかと思いましたが、少し違いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「（ファッションモデルが歩く）花道；（船の機関室、橋、作業場などの）狭い通路」とありました。
LDOCEには “a long raised structure that models walk along in a fashion show” や “a narrow structure for people to walk on that is high up inside or outside a building” などと定義されています。アメリカ英語では、前者を表すのにrunwayを用いるようです。
ドローンを使った演出を正確に行うため、招待客にはスマートフォンなどのWi-Fiを切る必要があり、通信環境を整えるのに時間がかかったことでショーの開始は予定時刻の50分遅れになったとのことです。（aqua）
