陸上のリオデジャネイロ五輪代表選考会を兼ねた第１００回日本選手権が名古屋市のパロマ瑞穂スタジアムで行われました。注目されていた男子１００メートル決勝ではケンブリッジ飛鳥選手が１０秒１６で優勝し、五輪代表に内定しました。
Studying leads Cambridge to Rio
Aska Cambridge won the men’s 100-meter final at the Japan Championships on Saturday evening, clocking 10.16 seconds at rainy Paloma Mizuho Stadium in Nagoya and clinching a spot at the upcoming Rio Olympics.
Ryota Yamagata was second in 10.17, and Yoshihide Kiryu was third in 10.31 to grab a spot at the Rio Games by topping the standard time set by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations.
Cambridge came out of the starting blocks slowly and was behind Yamagata and Kiryu. Though his two rivals have better personal bests, the 23-year old was confident he could win.
“I still thought I could make up that distance,” Cambridge said. He accelerated smoothly and caught Kiryu in midway through. He nipped Yamagata at the finish line to earn the Japan championship.

“nipped”を取りあげます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』では原形 nipは「…をつねる, かむ」という意味がありました。二位の山縣選手とはわずか０秒０１差で「ゴールラインのギリギリで山縣選手を阻止した」という訳になるかと思います。
LDOCEで定義を確認すると“nip something in the budという表現を見つけました。ここではその表現はなされていませんが、以前ブログでも何度か取り上げられており、様々なニュアンスがあることがわかりました。(lua)
