Strike-slip fault responsible for deadly Kumamoto quake
KUMAMOTO -- The earthquake in southwestern Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture on the night of April 14 which left at least nine people dead and injured more than 750 others was caused by a strike-slip fault.
Earthquakes in this region generally originate in such faults, but the magnitude 6.5 Kumamoto Earthquake was only 11 kilometers deep, causing a violent tremor and registered a maximum 7 on the Japanese 7-point seismic intensity scale -- the first temblor in the country to hit the top of the scale since the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.
中略
Many experts believe the faults triggered the latest earthquake. However, Japan Meteorological Agency official Gen Aoki told an emergency news conference, "At this point, we don't know if it (the quake) has a close relationship with these faults."

そしてOxford Dictionaries.com には, “strike-slip fault” で “a fault in which rock strata are displaced mainly in a horizontal direction, parallel to the line of the fault” と定義されていました。
(Cayu)
