San Francisco CHP on ‘High-Speed Pursuit’

Video on Sunday captured a Chihuahua leading San Francisco California Highway Patrol officers on a “high-speed pursuit.”

A CHP motorcycle officer can be seen in video posted to the department’s Twitter account around 7:40 a.m. capturing the chase on the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge.

The black Chihuahua was initially spotted on the bridge’s north side, but it ran away when a motorcycle officer attempted to grab it, initiating the pursuit, according to local TV station KNTV.

The dog was eventually nabbed, according to the CHP, which posted in a tongue-in-cheek tweet that included a dog emoji and said the “suspect” was later “taken into custody.”

今回取り上げる表現はtongue-in-cheek です。まずLongman English Dictionary Onlineで調べてみますと、"a tongue-in-cheek remark is said as a joke, not seriously" という意味があることが分かりました。そして次に『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第５版，研究社）で調べてみますと、「（形容詞で）本心からではない、からかい半分の　（副詞で）冗談半分で」という意味があることがわかりました。犬の絵文字を用いながら冗談まじりに無事保護したことをツイートしたのですね。

私もこの動画を見ましたが、チワワが車道を全速力で走っていたのでヒヤヒヤしました。対向車線に跳び出すこともなかったようですので、無事に保護されて良かったなと思いました。この表現は先輩方が過去に何度か取り上げておられます。（aqua）
