cap 復習

今回は先生から教えていただいた表現を取り上げます。

日産自動車は、提携先のルノーを通じて経営への影響力を強めようとしていたフランス政府に対して、経営の自主性を維持することを要求し、この方針が合意しました。

Nissan, Renault strike deal on power balance

Japanese automaker Nissan says it has secured a deal that would fend off interference in its management by its French partner Renault or by the French government.

A Nissan official announced that the agreement was concluded near Paris on Friday.

The French government is Renault's top shareholder. It planned to raise its voting rights in the automaker to gain more influence over it and to secure jobs for French workers.

The agreement will cap the French government's voting rights in Renault, except in areas concerning domestic strategy. Renault will also officially declare that it will not interfere in Nissan's management.

今回取り上げるのは、“cap”という表現です。この単語を見ると、「帽子、キャップ」といった意味が思い浮かびますが、この記事では動詞として用いられていることが分かります。LDCOEで調べてみると、“to limit the amount of something, especially money, that can be used, allowed, or spent”という定義が見つかりました。また『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』で確認してみると、「ふたをかぶせる」や「｟主に英｠〈出費など〉の上限を定める」と記載されていました。今回の場合では、フランス政府がルノーに対して行使できる議決権を制限するという意味で“cap”が使われています。(ninetails)
