Pope Cuts Short Visit to Typhoon-Hit Philippine Region Because of New Storm
MANILA — Pope Francis braved the strong winds and rain of a tropical storm on Saturday to make good on his pledge to meet with victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the eastern Philippines, but his visit to the island of Leyte was cut short because of the bad weather.
More than 7,000 people were killed and over four million displaced when Haiyan struck in November 2013. Francis, who was visiting the Philippines on his second trip to Asia as the pontiff, said before he left Rome that consoling the victims of Haiyan was his primary reason for visiting the country.
