久々の投稿になってしまい申し訳ありません、Greenです。新年早々インフルエンザにかかってしまいました。もう熱もなく、他の症状も出ていないので、明日からの授業にはしっかりと臨みます。今回取り上げる記事は、自宅で安静にしていた際、テレビをつけるといろいろな番組で目にした、「妖怪ウォッチ」に関するものです。
‘Yokai Watch’ earns over \5 billion
The Yomiuri Shimbun Box office earnings of the animated film “Yokai Watch: Tanjo no Himitsuda Nyan!” (secrets of the birth) exceeded \5 billion on Saturday, the 15th day since its release, its distributing agency announced.
The film eclipsed the previous domestic record by the recent hit “Frozen,” whose box office revenue topped \5 billion on its 17th day.
According to Toho Co., “Yokai Watch” was released at 408 movie theaters around the nation on Dec. 20 last year. Box office earnings during the first weekend after its release chalked up a new company record at \1.6 billion. As of Sunday, the film had attracted over 4.91 million filmgoers and earnings had exceeded \5.42 billion. It is the first movie distributed by Toho whose sales of advance tickets surpassed 1 million.
今回気になった表現は、“chalk up”です。以前も書かれている通り、「＜記録＞を達成する」（『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』大修館書店）という意味があります。子どもたちは妖怪ウォッチに夢中らしく、年末の風物詩ともいえる紅白歌合戦でも、キャラクターたちが登場してとても驚きました。今回意味を調べるにあたって、辞書で“chalk”を引いたところ、原義が「白亜」（『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』大修館書店）ということに驚きました。名詞では「（化石化した貝殻よりなる）白亜（質）」（『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』大修館書店）という意味もあるそうです。私は黒板に文字を書くときに使われるチョークのイメージしかなかったので、こういった単語の原義にも注目していきたいです。（Green）
