Hello Kitty to Help Paw Aside Impact of Sales Tax

While many of Japan’s retailers are worried about a temporary slump in business after April’s sales tax rise, one of them is betting it can stop the sales drop with a secret weapon: Hello Kitty.

As Japanese consumers may be more reluctant to make purchases after the tax increase, department store operator Takashimaya is hoping to woo foreign customers with limited edition products and events featuring the white, mouthless cat and her iconic bow.

“It’s said there will be a chill in sales from April 1, but we hope to bring customers to our stores in whatever way we can,” said a Takashimaya public relations representative. “Kitty is also popular all over the world.”
