Researchers unlock the secret of 'flying' squid
SAPPORO--Better not substitute squid for swine in the idiom "when pigs fly," because now researchers at Hokkaido University have succeeded in proving that these ocean mollusks really can get airborne.
In an article titled "Oceanic squid do fly," published in the digital issue of Marine Biology on Feb. 5, a German science magazine, the researchers said they have succeeded in figuring out how a squid propels itself from the water and glides through the air.
They describe the ability as a highly sophisticated “flight action.”
Kota Muramatsu, one of the team members, a marine ecology student at the university's graduate school of fisheries sciences, encountered a shoal of some 100 squid in the northwest Pacific Ocean about 600 kilometers east of Tokyo in July 2011, during a training cruise.
Muramatsu and Keiko Sekiguchi, now a researcher at the graduate school of arts and sciences at International Christian University, took photos of the cephalopod.
The squid were jumping out of the sea and gliding parallel to the surface for about two to three seconds, before landing back in the water about 30 meters away.

(EnDough)
