Detroit took a 2-0 lead in its American League championship series with New York as pitcher Anibal Sanchez shut down a Yankees lineup lacking Derek Jeter to help the Tigers to a 3-0 win Sunday.
In the National League championship series later at San Francisco, Carlos Beltran and David Freese hit two-run homers as the wild-card St Louis Cardinals beat the Giants 6-4 in Game 1.
The Tigers scored twice in the eighth inning after a pivotal missed call by second base umpire Jeff Nelson.
Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda did not allow a hit into the sixth inning, but the slumping New York hitters looked lost a day after their captain Jeter broke his ankle in the 12th inning of a 6-4 loss.

Making his second postseason start, Sanchez allowed just three hits deep into the game.
Game 3 in the best-of-seven series is Tuesday night in Detroit, with reigning AL Most Valuable Player Justin Verlander starting for the Tigers.
