Japanese comedian Sugi-chan breaks back while filming TV variety show
Popular comedian Sugi-chan broke his back Saturday after jumping off a 10-meter diving board at a swimming pool while filming a special variety show, TV Asahi Corp. said.
Sugi-chan, 39, will likely require three months to recover from injuries he sustained to his spine in the small hours of Saturday morning at the Chiba International General Swimming Center in Narashino, Chiba Prefecture, the broadcaster said.
According to TV Asahi, Sugi-chan dived into the water feet first, in line with an expert's instructions, but started to experience pain soon afterward. The TV station has decided to put off broadcasting the show, which was originally scheduled to air Sept. 9.
