javelin throwing

(GP)

High school girl struck by javelin in head during practice in Hiroshima

FUKUYAMA, Hiroshima -- A 15-year-old high school girl has been struck by a javelin in the head during practice here, local police said.

The accident occurred at around 11:25 a.m. on July 16 at Fukuyama Heisei University's athletic field in the Hiroshima prefectural city of Fukuyama, when a 2.6-meter-long javelin thrown by a student from the university accidentally struck the girl's head, local police said.

The girl was seriously injured in the accident, but is conscious.

The 19-year-old university student who threw the javelin is a member of the university's track-and-field team, and was practicing javelin throwing when the accident occurred, police said. Students practicing the sport are required to call out that they are about to throw the javelin before they do, as a warning for other people on the field. The university student told police he followed the regulations and informed others that he was about to throw.

A high school student who was near the injured girl told police that the man's warning could be heard.

According to police, the injured girl is the manager of a track-and-field club at a nearby prefectural high school, but was temporarily using the university's ground facilities due to ongoing construction at her school. She was on her way back home when the javelin struck her.

Police are looking into the possibility of a case of professional negligence resulting in bodily injury and are investigating the circumstances that led to the incident.
