bona fide / ring out
エフゲニー・キーシンのコンサートレビューからの落ち穂拾いです。「神童」としてカラヤンと共演した彼ももう４０歳です。
彼は昨年からショパンとグリーグのピアノ協奏曲をレパートリーに全世界を回っていました。私も去年の１１月に木曜日のUG先生の授業が終わった後にショパンを聴きに行きました。その彼がめずらしくスクリャービンの協奏曲にも取り組み始めたそうです。
The pianist Evgeny Kissin made a powerful impression when he played the Barber Sonata as the centerpiece of his Carnegie Hall recital three weeks ago. But he has not abandoned the big canvas of Romanticism, for which he has always been most admired, and on Wednesday evening he provided a gigantic sampling of it at a New York Philharmonic pension fund benefit concert. With Alan Gilbert on the podium, Mr. Kissin was the soloist in two big-boned works, Scriabin’s early Piano Concerto in F sharp minor, and Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor.
The Scriabin is a bona fide rarity and not entirely without justification. Scriabin composed the work in 1896 and was the soloist in the premiere the following year. Its main business is putting his own dazzling pianism on display, and though the distinctive voice and quirky harmonic style that would ring out in his later music are beginning to coalesce here, Scriabin still has a foot in Chopin’s world...
“bona fide”はラテン語から来ています。「正真正銘の」、「本物の・誠意のある」という意味で、形容詞や副詞として使えます。反対語の”mala fide”もセットで押さえておきたいですね。
ring outはここではring「ベルの擬音語」＋out「外へ」で文字通りに「鳴り響く」でいいと思います。ほかにも「ベル(タイムレコーダー)を鳴らして外へ出る」というニュアンスで「退社時間を記録する」という意味もあるので一緒に覚えておきます。(Minnesota)
