Osechi: Sales boom as importance of family is stressed
Fish markets up and down the country are alive with bustle in the last few days of the year as cooks snap up crab, bream, fish roe and dozens of other delicacies to make one of the biggest gastronomic events of the year: "osechi ryori."
Many in the West are unable to stomach much more than Alka-Seltzer on Jan. 1 after a night of heavy partying. But in Japan, where New Year's Eve is a peaceful, family affair, osechi is the order of the day: a selection of elaborate, laboriously prepared dishes presented in a layered lacquer box.

今回採り上げるのは動詞のstomachです。stomachというと名詞の「胃」がまず思い浮かぶと思いますが，ここでは動詞で用いられています。辞書で動詞のstomachを調べてみると「…を食べても気持ち悪くならない」とありました（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。また，英英ではto eat something without becoming illのように説明しています（LDOCE）。ちなみにAlka-Seltzerはアメリカで販売されている胃薬のこと。以上から，本文のMany in the West are unable to stomach much more than Alka-Seltzerは「欧米では胃薬（アルカセルツァー）以外は口にできない人が多い」と解釈できます。
日本でも元旦の暴飲暴食で胃薬以外は受けつけないという人もいるとは思いますが，みなさんはどうですか。僕の場合，今は田邉先生オススメの市販の風邪薬が手放せない状態です。
