small hoursを取り上げます。2,3時間などといった意味かと思いましたが、どうなのでしょうか。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）には「夜ふけ、夜中」とありました。LDOCEでは“the early morning hours, between about one and four o’clock”と定義されています。
Dictionary.comには“refer to the low numbers of those hours (one o'clock, two o'clock, etc.)”と説明がなされています。このことから12時などは二桁の数字になってしまうので、small hoursには含まれないということが分かりました。
small hoursというのは、イギリス英語です。アメリカ英語では「〈時刻が〉早い」という意味のweeをつかって、wee hoursと表現します。(rain)
