今回取り上げる語は、flippant /ˈflɪp(ə)nt/ です。文脈から「軽率な」と推測しました。以下で意味等を確認していきます。
まず意味をCambridge Dictionaryでみると、“not serious about a serious subject, in an attempt to be funny or to appear clever”とあり、LDOCEには“not being serious about something that other people think you should be serious about”と定義されていました。
次に語源をOEDでみると、“Early 17th century: from flip + -ant, perhaps on the pattern of heraldic terms such as couchant and rampant. Early senses included ‘nimble’ and ‘talkative’, hence ‘playful’, giving rise to the current use ‘lacking seriousness’.”とあります。
