　虫歯治療のために麻酔をした後に容体が急変し、当時2歳の女の子が亡くなった事故で、警察は業務上過失致死の疑いがあるとみて捜査を進めています。

Prefectural police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old girl under anesthetic for treatment of tooth cavities at a dental clinic in Fukuoka Prefecture.

They are looking into whether the clinic's handling of a sudden change in the child's condition last year was appropriate and if there was any possibility the dose of anesthetic administered was too strong.

Police suspect that the outcome could constitute a case of professional negligence resulting in death.

　cavity /kˈævəṭi/ を取り上げます。toothが前にきていることから、歯に関係することで、治療が必要ものであることがわかります。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で引くと「1（略式）くぼみ、穴；空洞　2（解剖）腔（くう）　3虫歯の穴」とありました。例には “You have two cavities.” 「虫歯が２本あります。」という文が挙げられています。

　Merriam-Websterには “an unfilled space within a mass　　especially : a hollowed-out space” や “an area of decay in a tooth” と定義されています。

　虫歯といえば、私の中でまず思い浮かぶのは tooth decay でしたが、言い換え表現としてこちらも覚えておきたいです。上記の英和辞典のdecayの項目には例として “prevent dental (tooth) decay” 「虫歯を防ぐ」 “remove the decay” 「虫歯を抜く」などと説明されており、不可算名詞として用いられることがわかりかした。数を言いたい時はcavityを用いることができそうです。（aqua）
