out of [within] earshot 復習

メモに合った表現を紹介します。out of [within] earshotです。文脈等は忘れてしまったので、さっそく意味の確認に入ります。

Oxford Dictionary of English (2th): “the range or distance over which one can hear or be heard”

Collins Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (8th): “If you are within earshot of someone or something, you are close enough to be able to hear them. If you are out of earshot, you are too far away to hear them”

Cambridge Dictionary: “the range of distance within which it is possible to be heard or to hear what someone is saying:”

『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）：「この届く範囲」「out of [within] earshot（of…）:（…に）聞こえない［聞こえる］所に」

OEDの例文を見てみるとbeyond earshot, in earshotという形もありましたが、ほとんどの場合out of earshotもしくはwithin earshotの形で用いられていたので、単語単体で覚えるのではなく成句として覚えたほうがいいと思います。

『ジーニアス英和大辞典』（大修館）にshotは「射程、着弾距離、（音の）到達範囲」という意味も持っているとの記載があります。この意味がぱっと頭に浮かべばすぐに意味を理解できたかもしれません。（ko-chi @ Calgary）
