‘Ghost kanji’ lurk in the Japanese lexicon

There are plenty of dead words in languages all over the world, but can the same be said about ghost words? Floating around the murky regions of digitized Unicode values are anywhere between 60 and 100 yūrei-moji — literally, “ghost characters” — haunting the Japanese kanji lexicon.

　気になったのは、見出しにあるlexicon /léksəkὰn/ です。以前大学の言語学の授業でこの単語には出会ったことがあり、語彙に関する知識の総体であったと記憶しています。記事ではどのような意味で使われているのでしょうか。
　『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、第2義に「(アルファベット順の)辞書、語彙目録[リスト]；専門用語、用語集」とありました。 また、LDOCEでは“an alphabetical list of words with their meanings, especially on a particular subject or in a particular language”と定義されています。記事で出てきたのは漢字辞典であることから、dictionaryではなく、このlexiconが選ばれたのだと思われます。(Blue Sky)
