『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「(雲などが)素早く動く、(追い風にのって)はしる」とあります。また、LDOCEでは “if cloud scuds across the sky, they move quickly” と定義されています。例文にはBayard sometimes appears as a cloud, scudding across the sky on Midsummer's Day.やThe President looked out the window at the scudding clouds, put on the overcoat, then took it off.が載っています。Oxford Living DictionariesではMid 16th century (as a verb): perhaps an alteration of the noun scut, thus reflecting the sense ‘race like a hare’.と由来の解説がなされています。
