今回調べたのはgroundless /ɡráʊndləs/ です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）には「根拠［理由］」のない、事実無根の」とありました。またLDOCEにはnot based on facts or reasonと定義されています。
groundを改めて調べてみたところ根拠、理由といった意味がありました。基礎といった意味から派生してこのような意味を持つようになったようです。辞書には複数名詞であるとも記載されています。また今回の意味から考えられるon the grounds ofなどのイディオムもあるということがわかりました。(rain)
