『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「(敵など)を征服する、打ち破る、(議論・競技などで相手)を打ち負かす」とあります。またLDOCEでは “to defeat someone or something completely” と定義されています。例文にはVictor and vanquished, he was beginning to think, came together in art and were one and the same.やThis spirit often turned the victors into the vanquished.が記載されています。「英・語・源」をみると、ラテン語のvincere(=to conquer)が由来となっている事が分かりました。
