power outage 復習

今回取り上げるのはpower outage /pάʊɚ άʊṭɪdʒ/ です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）には「電力の供給停止、停電」と記載されています。LDOCEにはa period of time when there is no electricity supplyと定義されていました。またこの表現はアメリカ的であるとも記載されています。イギリス英語ではpower failureやpower cutと表現するようです。
過去のブログにもある通りoutageだけでも停電という意味を持ちますが、outageはLDOCEにa period of time during which a service such as the electricity supply cannot be providedとある通り、電気以外が供給されていない状態を指すこともあるようです。断水など指す言葉でもあるのではないでしょうか。今回の記事の場合は原因が停電であるということをはっきりさせるためにpower outageと表現されているのではないかと思います。(rain)
