sediment 復習
台風21号が甚大な被害を引き起こしているようですね。

今回取り上げるのはsediment /sédəmənt/ です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）で調べてみたところ「（液体中の）沈殿物、おり、かす」や「堆積物」と記載されていました。LDOCEではsolid substances that settle at the bottom of a liquidと定義されています。
ラテン語で「沈殿物」という意味のsedimentumが語源のようです。また前回の記事に書いてあるsitとの関係を調べてみたところ、ラテン語で「座る」という意味のsedereが語源となっているという説もあるということが分かりました。(rain)
