lofty /lˈɔːfti｜lˈɔfti/を取り上げたいと思います。loftというと家の屋根裏スペースのような高い場所のことを言うので、その形容詞であるloftyは文脈も加味して「至高の」といった意味になるのではないかと考えました。『ウィズダム英和辞典』によると、「高尚な、気高い、高貴な〈考え方・信念など〉」と言う意味になるそうです。使用例としてa lofty goal「崇高なる目標」が示されており、another lofty accomplishment はこれと同義なのではないかと思います。確認のためにLDOCEも引いたところ、“lofty ideas, beliefs, attitudes etc show high standards or high moral qualities - use this to show approval”と定義されていました。
ちなみに、冒頭に挙げた名詞のloftですが、ロフトはロフトでも米と英では少し意味に違いがあるようです。気になる方は辞書などで確認してみてください。(Blue Sky)
