今回取り上げる語は、trample /ˈtramp(ə)l/ です。裏ゼミで扱った表現からの抜粋です。語源等が気になったので、以下で確認していきます。
まず意味を Cambridge Dictionary でみると、“to step heavily on something or someone, causing damage or injury” とあり、LDOCE には “to behave in a way that shows that you do not care about someone’s rights or feelings” と定義されていました。
次に語源を OED でみると、“Late Middle English (in the sense ‘tread heavily’): frequentative of tramp.” とありました。
