intermittent 復習

　とてつもなく暑い日が続いています。そのような状況で10億人以上が、エアコンなどのない生活を余儀なくされています。

More than a billion people are at risk from a lack of air conditioning and refrigeration to keep them cool and to preserve food and medicines as global warming brings more high temperatures, a study showed on Monday.

　今回取り上げるのはintermittent / ìnṭɚmítnt /です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版,大修館書店）には「一時的にやむ[止まる],断続的な;間欠性の,周期的な」とありました。またLDOCEにはstopping and starting often and for short periodsと定義されていました。

　intermittentは、ラテン語で「中止する」という意味のintertmittereの現在分詞であるintermittentemからできた単語のようです。現在分詞なので完全には中止していないけれども、中止の段取りを取っているといったイメージかと思います。
