　put ~ to the swordを取り上げます。文脈的にイングランドをクロアチアが負かしたことを言っているのは確かだと思います。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、put A towel the swordで「A〈人〉を刀にかける；(戦いで)A〈人〉を殺りくする」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“to kill someone with a sword”と定義されています。literaryと書いてあったので、主に書き言葉で使われる表現のようです。辞書を引いた限りでは物騒な意味でしたが、文脈ではイングランドを討ち取ったという意味で使われているのは間違い無いと思います。(Blue Sky)
