　今回取り上げる表現は、deadbeat /ˈdɛdbiːt/ です。出会ったことのない語であり、意味と語源が気になったので取り上げました。以下で確認していきます。
　まず意味を Cambridge Dictionary でみると、“a person who is not willing to work, does not behave in a responsible way, and does not fit into ordinary society” とあり、LDOCE には “someone who is lazy and has no plans in life” と定義されていました。
　次に語源を ONLINE ETYMOLOGY DICTIONARY でみると、“”worthless sponging idler," 1863, American English slang, perhaps originally Civil War slang, from dead (adj.) + beat. Earlier dead beat was used colloquially as an adjectival expression, "completely beaten, so exhausted as to be incapable of further exertion" (1821), and perhaps the base notion is of "worn out, good for nothing." とあります。
