Research Writing and Formという授業の今学期最大の課題はCritique of research articleです。私に与えられたトピックは偶然にも“Embodied Kawaii”という日本と関連のある記事でした。その課題の一環として今現在はWebsite Evaluationというものに取り組んでいます。Critiqueのための記事のreferences欄に記載されているウェブサイトと本記事の関連性等について評価をするというものです。私が選んだサイトはThe Guardianの過去のニュース記事です。今回はその記事から拾ってきた表現を紹介します。ニュースから取り上げるのは久しぶりです。

turn a blind eye to です。文脈と表現の構成から予測はできましたが、面白い表現だと思ったので調べてみました。意味を確認していきます。

Oxford Dictionary of English (2th): “pretend not to notice”

Collins Online Free Dictionary: “If you say that someone is turning a blind eye to something bad or illegal that is happening, you mean that you think they are pretending not to notice that it is happening so that they will not have to do anything about it.”

『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）：「・・・を見て見ぬふりをする」

特に悪事等を見逃すというニュアンスがあるようです。

「見て見ぬふりをする」というのはシンプルにlook the other way という表現でも表すことができます。The cabinet looked the other way という例文と共にUG先生から春合宿の際に教えていただきました。ちなみに『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）には「顔をそむける；見て見ないふりをする」そしてOxford Dictionary of English (2th) には“deliberately ignore wrongdoing by others” “deliberately avoid seeing or noticing someone or something”と載っています。[ko-chi @ Calgary]
