今回とりあげるのはtenaciously / tənéɪʃəsli / です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版）には「〈考え・影響などが〉頑強な,不屈の」などといった意味のtenaciousという形容詞の副詞形であると記載されていました。
また、LDOCEには"determined to do something and unwilling to stop trying even when the situation becomes difficult"や"tenacious beliefs, ideas etc continue to have a lot of influence for a long time"と定義されていました。
ラテン語で保つという意味のtenereが語源となって出来た単語のようです。他にtenereが語源となってできた単語にはobtainなどがありました。
本ブログでこの単語が以前扱われていたのは前回大会の時でした。時代に関わらず、日本のサッカーの強みは粘り強さなのだと改めて思いました。（rain）
