まず意味を Cambridge Dictionary でみると、despondent で “unhappy and with no hope or enthusiasm” とあり、LDOCE には “extremely unhappy and without hope” と定義されていました。despondency は despondent の名詞形です。
次に語源を ONLINE ETYMOLOGY DICTIONARY でみると、“1650s; see despondence + abstract noun suffix -cy.” とあり、despondence を確認すると “1670s, from Latin despondere "to give up, lose, lose heart, resign, to promise in marriage" (especially in phrase animam despondere, literally "give up one's soul"), from the sense of a promise to give something away, from de- "away" (see de-) + spondere "to promise" (see spondee).
