inoperative 復習

　原子力科学者会報の編集者が北朝鮮の核問題についての質問に答えた記事がありました。

　今回取り上げるのはinoperative / ìnάp(ə)rəṭɪv / です。接頭辞のin-とoperativeに分けることができるのではないかと思います。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版,大修館書店）には「手術不能の」や「実施[使用]不可能な,〈法・制度などが〉機能しない」とありました。また、LDOCEにはa machine that is inoperative is not working, or is not in working conditionやa system or a law that is inoperative does not work anymore or cannot be made to workと記載されていました。。

　やはり否定を意味する接頭辞のin-にoperateを形容詞形にしたoperativeがついてできた単語のようです。本当にお恥ずかしながらoperateを見たときに「手術をする」ばかりが思い浮かんで、ぱっと「作用する」といった意味が思いつきませんでした。基本義が「働きをする」なので改めてきちんと基本義から単語を理解しなくてはと思いました。(rain)
