The Diet on Wednesday passed a package of amendments that — for the first time in 140 years — includes a measure lowering the definition of adulthood to 18 years old from the current age of 20 but keeps the legal age for drinking, smoking and gambling unchanged at 20.

wedlock / wédlὰk /を取り上げます。文脈とwedというパーツが含まれていることから、結婚のことを指していること推測しました。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「結婚(している状態)、婚姻」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“the state of being married”と定義されています。予想通り結婚という意味でした。
ちなみに、LDOCEにはこの単語の意味よりも先にborn out of wedlockというフレーズが載っており、“if a child is born out of wedlock, its parents are not married when it is born”とありました。さらに、『ウィズダム英和辞典』にはout of [in] wedlockで「庶出[嫡出]で、両親が結婚せずに[結婚して]」と定義されていました。インターネットでwedlockを調べてみてもこの表現がよく出てきたので、wedlockはこのフレーズで用いられることが多いのかと思います。
