monopolize 復習

　政府は、2020年までに自動運転機能の搭載された公共交通機関を導入しようとしているようです。

　取り上げるのはmonopolize / mənάpəlὰɪz /です。mono-とあるので「ひとつの」といった意味と関係した単語であるというところまでは推測ができました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版,大修館書店）で調べたところ、「<生産・販売など>を独占する;…の独占」や「<時間など>をひとり占めにする」とありました。またLDOCEにはto have complete control over something so that other people cannot share it or take part in itやto use a lot of someone’s time or attentionとありました。今回の記事の意味とは関係ありませんが「束縛する」といった意味合いもあるのではないかと思います。

　語源を調べたところギリシャ語で「売る」という意味のpoleinと接頭辞のmono-からできた単語のようです。

　調べていたときにアメリカで生まれた卓上ゲームのMonopolyがあるということを知りました。説明文を読んだところ日本でいう人生ゲームのようでした。(rain)
