今回はcandid / kˈændɪd / を紹介します。普段、canは助動詞として使われ、didは動詞などに使われていますが、一緒になるとどのような意味になるのでしょうか。私は「やるれることはやった」という意味になると予想しました。

調べたところ予想と異なっていました。
まずOxford English Dictionaryでは “Truthful and straightforward; frank.” と定義されていました。つまり「正直な、隠すことなく」と言った意味でしょうか。
ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版(大修館)には「(聞き手に不快なほど)率直な, 遠慮のない, 包み隠しのない」とありました。同じような意味ではfrankが挙げられます。
続いて語源を調べたところ、ラテン語で「白くて輝いている」という意味になります。

ちなみに記事ではcandidの後にheart-to-heartとあり、この表現も「率直な」意味で言い換えられているのがわかります。(amphibian)
