put one’s foot in one’s mouth 復習

私が語学学校で受けている授業の一つにnote-taking and listeningというものあります。昨日の授業内容は、就職面接に関する動画を見て、それをノートテイクするというものでした。そのビデオの中から拾った表現を紹介します。

put one’s foot in one’s mouth です。先生には“say something without thinking (something stupid) という意味であると教えていただきました。辞書の定義を見ていきます。

まずはOxford Dictionary of English (2th)から見ていきます。put one’s foot in it (or put one’s foot in one’s mouth)で“《informal》say or do something tactless or embarrassing”と定義されています。次にLONGMAN Handy Learner’s Dictionaryです。“put one’s foot in it esp. BrE, put one’s foot in one’s mouth esp. AmE. ----- infml say the wrong thing”とありました。そしてCollins COUBUILD Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (8th)です。“If someone puts their foot in it or puts their foot in their mouth, they accidentally do or say something which embarrasses or offends people.[informal]”と記載されていました。最後に『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）です。put one’s foot in one’s mouth｟主に米｠＝put one’s foot in it｟主に英｠「まずいことを言う、どじを踏む」と載っていました。

まとめるとput one’s foot in one’s mouthとput one’s foot in itはともに「へまなことを言う、しくじる」という意味であり、前者は主にアメリカ、後者は主にイギリスで用いられるとのことです。

ちなみにmake[commit] a gaffeでも「へまをする」を表すことができます。これは以前UG先生に教えていただいた表現です。gaffeを取り上げている過去の記事があったので是非参照してみてください。(ko-chi @ calgary)
