昨日の記事に他にも気になる表現があったので、もう一度同じ記事から取り上げます。

気になったのはrespite / réspɪt /です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「«仕事などの»小休止、休息；«病気の»小康」とありました。また、LDOCEではa short when something bad step happening, so that the situation is temporarily betterと定義されています。以上の定義から、respiteは朝鮮の南北首脳会談を控えた両国が軍事的な動きなどを控えている状況を表現するために使われているのだと思います。ちなみに、ラテン語のrespicere「振り返る」を語源としているそうです(goo辞書)。このラテン語の単語を語源とする単語として、他にrespectがあります。(Blue Sky)
