pick up the slack 復習

　先日のゼミで秋田犬に関する記事を読みました。もう既にいくつか取り上げられていますが、もう一つご紹介したいと思います。

取り上げるのはpick up the slack / pík ˈʌp ðə slˈæk /です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版,大修館書店）には「〔ロープの〕たるみをピンと張る」や「（不振の企業に）活を入れる,人材・資源を活性活用する」や「（他人がやらないことを）引き継ぐ」と記載されていました。LDOCEにはto make a system or organization as efficient as possible by making sure that money, space, or people are fully usedやto do something that needs to be done because someone else is no longer doing itやto make a rope tighterとありました。Take up the slackでも使われるようです。

　同じslackを使った表現でpick up the slackとは真逆の「息抜きを与える,…をそっとしておく」という意味になるcut [ give ] O some slackというものもあることが分かりました。(rain)
