swathe 復習
The South China Sea is one of the most hotly contested regions in the world. China claims a huge swathe of territory across the sea, overlapping the claims of Vietnam and the Philippines, among others.

気になったのはswathe / swάð / です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「…を〔包帯・布に〕くるむ、巻く」「…を包囲する」という動詞の意味と「包帯，巻き布」という名詞の意味があることが確認できました。またswathとも表すことができます。今回はterritoryの説明なので「囲まれた一区画の」といった訳がいいかと思います。
LDOCEによると“a long thin area of something, especially land”と定義されています。もうひとつ“to wrap or cover something in something”という定義もありました。語源は中期英語；古期英語 swæth「足跡」からきています。(Kiwi girl)
