本日取り上げる単語は、slime ballです。というのも、カタカナ読みすると「スライムボール」となるこの単語。100均などに売られているあのドロドロしたものを連想させたので調べてみることにしました。
　『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)によると、「口先だけの嫌なやつ」と記されておりました。また、slime単体では、「（川底などの）ねば土、軟泥：ヘドロ、粘液、嫌なもの、悪臭のするもの」と記されておりました。しかしながら、参考程度と思い英辞郎で同表現をで確認してみたところ、「〈俗・軽蔑的〉げす野郎、嫌な［卑劣な・低俗な・虫の好かない］やつ、嫌な場所」とあったため、この単語は文脈によっては非常に強い意味を持ち得る、使用の上では大いに気をつけるべき単語であることがわかります。(WREN)
