今回取り上げる単語はcheckered (chequered) /ˈCHekərd/ /ˈtʃɛkərd/ です。以前に裏ゼミ内で触れた単語ではないのかと記憶していますが、もう一度確認していきたいと思います。
『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』（第五版、学研プラス）で意味を引いたところ、基本的意義として挙がるのが「チェック柄の、市松模様の」である一方、やや比喩的に用いられるのが「波乱に富んだ、明暗交互の、浮き沈みの多い」です。また、careerやlifeと頻繁に共起されます。
定義についても、Oxford Dictionariesでは、“Marked by periods of varied fortune or discreditable incidents.” となっていて、やはり「明暗交互の」というニュアンスが伺えます。（bro-taro-world）
