stairwell / stɛ́rwɛ̀l / が気になりました。まず今回ポイントになりそうなwellから調べてみました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると馴染みのある意味の他に「井戸，油井，（階段の）吹き抜け，弁護士席，わき出る」とあり、今回は「階段の吹き抜け」の意味で使用されていることがわかりました。つづいてstairwellを引くと 「階段開口部，吹き抜け」とありました。LDOCEでは“the space going up through all the floors of a building, where the stairs go up”と定義されています。(Kiwi girl)
