a mug's game

　昨日、quixotic についてのブログを書いている際、Cambridge Dictionary の Thesaurus で気になる表現を見つけました。それが a mug's game です。「マグカップ」の mug と game からなる語ですが、語源が特に気になったので以下で確認していきます。
　まず意味を LDOCE でみると、“to be something that only stupid people do because it is not likely to be successful or to bring you money” とあり、Cambridge Dictionary には “an activity that will not make you happy or successful” と定義されていました。また、LDOCE に “British English spoken” とregisterが示されているので、英国英語の話し言葉であることがわかります。
　次に語源を The Dictionary of American Slang, Fourth Edition でみると “1910+; fr British sense of mug, ''dupe, fool, sucker,'' found by 1851” とあります。各語を調べてみると mug は LDOCE に “British English spoken informal” “someone who is stupid and easy to deceive” とあり、game には “informal” “an area of work or business” とあるので、「バカなやつがする仕事」から「儲からない仕事」の意味が出たのではないかと思います。
　Thesaurus は語彙を増やすために大切だと再確認しました。また面白い表現があったら取り上げたいです。(OkaUchi)
