SAO PAULO (AP) — As the slow wheels of Brazilian justice turn, former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is inching toward jail.
On Monday, appeals court judges unanimously upheld their decision to reject da Silva’s appeal of his conviction on corruption charges — a move that brings him one step closer to being barred from the presidential ballot and put behind bars.
Despite his legal woes, da Silva is leading polls for the October presidential election, and he is currently traveling through Brazil’s south to rally his supporters. His caravan has been met by protesters along the way.

読み進めていく内に気になったフレーズを紹介します。今回はput behind barsです。文脈から推測して、「投票の候補者リストからの除外、収監に近く動きの早まり」との解釈をしました。実際の意味は何でしょうか。『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』（第五版、学研プラス）でbarを引いたところ、behind bars [副詞] 「獄中で、刑務所に入って」という意義があることが分かりました。さらに、『英和辞典Weblio辞書』では、put behind bars「閉じ込める、監禁する、刑務所のように」とあったため、やはり記事中の一件の内容からして「収監」と表されるのが適切ではないかと思われます。ちなみに、定義については、The Free Dictionaryで “To be arrested and held in prison; to be serving time in prison” となっています。（broccoli）
