今回取り上げる単語はfruit / frúːt / です。中学生で覚える単語で、意味は「果物」です。しかし、本文の中ではこの意味ではありません。『ジーニアス英日辞典』第４版（大修館）では、「[しばしばthe ~s]成果、the ~s of industry 勤勉の成果」とありました。つまりこの記事では、辻さんの今までやってきた成果の意味で使われています。

また、fruitから派生した単語のfruitionは「（計画・目標などの）達成、実現」の意味になります。「植物が実を結ぶ」というのは、「成果を挙げる」という状況にそっくりなことから「努力」の意味でも使われるようになったのではないでしょうか。(amphibian)
