resilient 復習

東日本大震災の発生から昨日でちょうど7年の歳月が流れました。

Japan marked the seventh anniversary Sunday of the massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011 that left more than 18,000 people dead or missing and led to one of the worst nuclear disasters ever.

気になった単語は resilient /rɪzíljənt/ です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版(大修館)で意味を引いてみると「(不運・病気などから)立ち直る[回復]の早い;快活な」「弾力性のある、跳ね返る[to]」とありました。Oxford Dictionary of English (2th)には"able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions”と定義されています。こちらの定義を見てみると、「困難な状況から立ち直る」ということがよくわかります。

語源は同辞書に"Mid 17th century: from Latin resilient- ‘leaping back’, from the verb resilire (see resile)”と記されていました。さらにこのことからleap backについて調べてみるとleap back to lifeで「再び活気を取り戻す」という似た意味を表すことができるということが分かりました。

今もまだ被災者の方の中には苦しみ続けている方がたくさんいます。ただ見守るだけでなく何かできることがないか今一度考えたいです。(ko-chi)
