　今回取り上げる語は、marmalise (also marmalize) /ˈmɑːməlʌɪz/ です。綴り字をみると marmalade に似ており、「マーマレード化する」という訳が頭を一瞬よぎりました。この語とは初対面であったので、以下で確認していきます。
　LDOCE や Cambridge Dictionary には記載がありませんでしたが、OED を確認したところ、“Beat (someone) up.” とありました。また同書に、この語は British English で、Informal とあります。
　気になる成り立ちですが、OED の Origin をみると、“1960s: of uncertain origin; perhaps humorously from marmal- (in marmalade) + -ize (perhaps after pulverize).” とあり、やはり「マーマレード」が関係していると言えそうです。マーマレードは果物などの材料を細かく刻んで、煮詰めて作るのが一般的です。その様子が「叩きのめす」の意味に繋がったのだと思います。(OkaUchi)
