amplitude 復習

新燃岳では依然として噴火活動が続いています。

Officials say they have observed eruptions on the mountain since March 1st.
They say volcanic activity is brisk and that 18 explosive eruptions generating aerial vibrations were recorded on Tuesday and 16 on Wednesday.

In the series of eruptions, officials confirmed that large volcanic rocks flew up to 700 meters from the crater and smoke reached as high as 3,000 meters.

Cameras recorded lava rising in a wide area inside the crater.

The amount of sulfur dioxide in the volcanic gas released from the mountain is also increasing sharply. It reached 34,000 tons on Tuesday, 15 times as much as was recorded on March 2nd.

Also, volcanic earthquakes are being recorded frequently and volcanic tremors continue in the state of large amplitude.

今回の語はamplitude / æmplət(j)ùːd / です。
magnitudeと似ていることから、大きさの程度や揺れを表すのではないかと推測しました。
Weblio英和和英辞典で調べると「広さ、大きさ、十分なこと、たっぷり、振幅」とありました。ここでは “large amplitude”で「大振幅」という訳が出来ると思いました。
またLDOCEでは “the distance between the middle and the top or bottom of a wave such as a sound wave”と定義されていました。

新燃岳は九州南部の霧島山中央部に位置する、標高1,421mの活火山です。また、現在も噴火が継続しており噴火レベルは3を維持、火口から3km圏内では大きな噴石や火砕流への警戒が必要という状況です。

今回のような爆発的噴火は2011年3月以来ということもあり、空の便にも影響が出ています。
相手は自然のため、何が起こるか分かりませんが、ニュースやラジオ等で情報を確認し新たな動きに注意したいと思います。(sixth-dan)
