今回取り上げる単語はhamper /hˈæmpɚ/ です。意味の推測ができなかったので、すぐに辞書で調べました。『ジーニアス英日辞典』第４版（大修館）によると、「…の邪魔をする、阻止する、身動きを取れなくする」とありました。また『ロングマン現代英英辞典』では“to make it difficult for someone to do something”と定義されていました。
語源を調べると、hemは「＜布・衣服＞へりを（折り返して）縫う、まつる」とあり、-erは接尾辞として「反復を表す動詞を作る」とありました。つまり、へり縫いを繰り返して周りを囲み動きが取れなくなる＝邪魔をするといった意味になると思います。
